Stronger programs require students to ship at least one playable game as a capstone; weaker ones treat the portfolio as optional, which is the wrong call for this field.

You may thrive here if you have already shipped something playable — a game jam entry, a mod, a small Unity or Godot project — and want to deepen the technical work behind it. Real interest in graphics math, systems programming, performance optimization, or engine internals is the durable signal. So is willingness to ship: the students who break into the industry are the ones who finish projects, even small ones, rather than chasing perfection on prototypes that never release. Gameplay programming, engine and tools development, real-time graphics, multiplayer netcode, and simulation work are the technical lanes most resilient to both layoffs and AI disruption.
Think twice if your interest in games is mostly as a player rather than as a builder, or if you expect the major to be more about design and storytelling than programming. The work is C++, math, and debugging — closer to systems engineering than to the player experience. Think twice, too, if you cannot accept the pay differential: the same technical skills earn $40,000 to $75,000 more per year at non-games tech employers, and the games-industry layoff cycle means even that lower pay is not guaranteed to persist. If you are choosing between this major and Computer Science at a stronger school, take the CS option and pursue games through indie projects, game jams, and a senior thesis or capstone. The CS degree opens more doors and closes none.
If you do choose this path, the moves that matter most are: ship at least one finished game on Steam or itch.io before graduating, build depth in something AI cannot easily replicate (engine internals, real-time rendering, netcode, performance optimization), and treat adjacent lanes — defense simulation around Orlando, AR/VR enterprise applications for Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest, virtual production for film (the LED-wall work behind The Mandalorian), automotive HMI built on Unity and Unreal — as legitimate destinations rather than fallbacks. Those markets pay better than AAA, are more durable through downturns, and use most of the same technical skills.
